King’s College London Quadrangle Building
Converting a semi-derelict structure into a university social hub
The Department of Engineering at King’s College London is growing and needed new space for its diverse teaching, learning and research activities. Our ambitious conversion completed in 2022 of a semi-derelict two-storey basement and unloved quadrangle between the Grade I-listed Somerset House and King's Building has created vibrant new accommodation for the department and a social heart for the central London campus.

History & Context
Built in the 1950s, the Quadrangle Building is located at the heart of King’s College London’s Strand Campus. The subterranean structure occupies the space between a street-level quadrangle and the Thames embankment, just 9 metres below.
Formerly a teaching and laboratory space, it was where British chemist, Rosalind Franklin, conducted her early research into the understanding of molecular structures, most notably the double helix in DNA molecules. However, the building had fallen into disuse due to years of poor maintenance and failing waterproofing.

Our Approach
Impact
By retaining and redeveloping the existing frame, we achieved significant carbon savings compared to a previous demolition proposal.
Former cellular rooms and lightless corridors now house 3,000 square meters of state-of-the-art laboratories and workspaces for students and academic staff.
Our approach minimised campus disruption during construction, allowing the urban campus to continue to operate.
The design ensures adaptability and easy reconfiguration for future needs.
Construction
Appointed in 2011, we worked closely with architect Hall McKnight to navigate numerous site constraints, including limited access, a Grade I listed context and an active urban campus.
