Steel Recovery and Reuse at City Place
08.03.2023
With growing interest across the built environment in steel recovery and reuse, and its potential to deliver substantial embodied carbon savings, the need to develop and share good practice in this area is greater than ever before.
City Place House, London, is a live project for GPE that demonstrates how steel reclamation and reuse work in practice, taking a steel frame from an existing building in central London and deconstructing it to allow reclamation and reuse on several new projects throughout the city.
In the March issue of The Structural Engineer magazine, Elliott Wood engineer Thomas Howarth explains the process of deconstructing the existing building, describing the approach of investigating, cataloguing, recovering and inspecting the steel in order to make best use of the existing structural materials in future projects, and presents some of the key lessons learned so far.
